Book Summary

The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird’s world, vampyres have always existed.  In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire — that is, if she makes it through the Change.  Not all of those who are chosen do.  It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling.  She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx.  But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers.  When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school’s most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny–with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

Book Review

So, I have a confession to make. This was my first vampire book. Ever.

I know what you’re thinking. How could I not have read a vampire book before? Twilight was crazy a few years back and I never got around to reading them (although most people would feel happy for me). So – this being my first vampire experience – I had high hopes. The further I got into this book the more and more my hopes were squashed on the ground and then stomped on.

I had one thought the whole time I was reading this book. Mean Girls. Marked is pretty much a vampire version of Mean Girls.

A girl has to start her life over by switching schools. She meets a snotty blonde with her two backups, and develops a crush for the snotty blonde’s ex boyfriend. She also becomes friends with two people: a girl who was wronged by the snotty blonde and humiliated in front of everyone, and a gay boy named Damien. When the girl is invited to join the snotty blonde’s group she doesn’t want to except but her and her friends decide that she should join and try to bring down the snotty girl.

Now, did I just explain Mean Girls or Marked? They literally have the same plot. Except for one thing; I liked Mean Girls.

Marked was just a really annoying book with annoying characters and an annoying plot. And most of the time the main character was at rituals, so I was basically just reading 300 pages of smoke and chanting.

I gave Marked 2/5 stars. I found it unoriginal and overall, just annoying.
